Iron Rod French Alpine Dairy Goats: 2007 Summary

February started out the year with a livestock breeder's nightmare. Two pit bull dogs got into our pastures, attacking our six dry yearling show hopefuls, the "Croatian kids." All were mauled, Surpass killed, Stasia died three days later, and Sunkocret was so damaged that her rear leg stance was altered. The remaining three, Myrna, Stasit, and Sustina, responded well to weeks of shots, washings, changing of dressings, and physical therapy. The scars are still there, but good care and conformation won out. All three received BJrDIS merits over the summer.

We did well in the beginning of the summer, with Pearl taking another Grand, 1x BOB and 4 Reserve Grands, and Andalusia was 1st in her class every time shown. Shemise won 3 Best of Breeds. In June, my father Philip Steiner died. In July, the transmission went out on our truck. We decided to replace the truck, requiring a month of shopping. We now have a reliable Tundra and are happy with the upgrade. However, our trips to the shows were curtailed.

Our youngest son, Nathaniel, the little dark-haired boy that I used to drag around to all the shows as a grade schooler, is now a 6'4" returned missionary, finishing college, and is newly married to a wonderful girl, Leah Renae Bischoff, in the Latter-day Saint Washington D.C. Temple. See www.mormon.org. Some things went very right this year.

Unable to take advantage of the show season last year, I am excited at what I perceive to be some outstanding animals this year. I am determined to take the herd out in 2008. We will also be linear appraised this year. Hope to see you at the National Show in Kentucky!
